Start with care, not a label
When someone’s use of alcohol, substances, gambling, or another behaviour starts affecting daily life, families often feel unsure of what to do next. Concern does not mean blame. It can be the beginning of a clear, respectful conversation.
Changes worth noticing
There is no single sign that explains every situation. It can help to notice changes that continue over time, such as:
- difficulties with routine, work, study, or responsibilities
- secrecy, isolation, or sudden changes in behaviour
- increased conflict at home or financial pressure
- repeated promises to stop followed by continued use
- physical, emotional, or safety concerns
How to begin the conversation
Choose a calm moment. Use specific observations instead of accusations, and listen as much as you speak. A simple opening can be: “I have noticed you seem to be struggling. I care about you and I would like to understand how we can get support.”
When to seek urgent help
If there is immediate danger, severe confusion, a medical emergency, or a risk of self-harm, call 112 in India or seek urgent medical care. This article is general information and does not replace medical advice.
A practical next step
You can call Aarambh to talk through the concern and understand whether its current counselling-led support may be appropriate. A first conversation does not confirm admission or a treatment recommendation.
